Friends, family, and  relationships

Dos ✅

  • Get their attention properly

  • Face them directly

  • Speak clearly and at a normal pace

  • Rephrase, don't just repeat

  • Use visuals and pen/paper

  • Learn basic sign language

  • Include them actively

  • Use text messages or other texting apps as a form of communication

  • Be patient with them

  • Include them in conversations 

  • Include them in social plans and activities 

  • Check in if they seem withdrawn or isolated 

  • Encourage direct communication 

  • Be understanding when communication breakdowns occur 

  • Support opportunities to connect with others who have a hearing loss 

Don’ts ❌

  • Don't shout or exaggerate

  • Don't cover your face

  • Don't grab their hands while signing

  • Don't grab or poke from behind

  • Don't dismiss missed information

  • Don't rely on them to "hear" in loud places

  • Don't speak when they are engaged in another task

  • Don't treat them differently or talk to them any differently

  • Don’t assume they don’t want to participate 

  • Don’t make decisions for them 

  • Don’t exclude yourself from conversations because it is easier 

  • Don’t assume communication difficulties mean a lack of interest 

  • Don’t speak about them as if they aren’t there; speak to them directly
